Festival 500 invites you to be a part of its Grande Finale Concert – the exciting conclusion of a weeklong celebration of choral music! An unforgettable evening with just the right blend of Newfoundland charm and international flavour, there is something here for everyone… did we mention that you will have an opportunity to sing too? Featuring
• International recording ensemble Club for Five! This Finnish contemporary acappella group challenges conventional wisdom about the capability of the human voice. Their unique arrangements and original compositions combine jazz, pop, rock, and even classical music in such a chic and unique way, that they create a musical genre all their own. During performances, audiences are astounded to hear everything from electric guitars and horns to drums and other percussion instruments. Yet, they don’t see one musical instrument on stage! Their creative ways of “playing” rhythmic music without a single instrument leaves audiences spellbound! Don’t miss this dynamic group!
• Acclaimed Canadian soprano, Wendy Nielsen! Whether in recital, in concert or on the operatic stage, Wendy Nielsen enchants audiences with her sumptuous voice and engaging presence. Appearing with the Metropolitan Opera, the Florida Grand Opera and the Minnesota Orchestra just to name a few, Wendy is Canada’s own international operatic sensation!
• Imagine the sight and sound of 1,000 singers accompanied by a full symphony orchestra! Featuring all 1,000 Festival 500 participants - from every corner of the world and all walks of life – singing together in harmony for what is sure to be the pinnacle of the evening! Accompanied by the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, come and experience our Massed Adult Choir in a spine-tingling performance of select movements from Verdi’s Requiem. Or perhaps the young voices of our Massed Youth Choir, performing some of the world’s best known spirituals, is just what you need to put a smile on your face!
Festival 500 Sharing the Voices
Festival 500 Sharing the Voices is a celebrated international non-competitive festival of choral music that takes place in the intimate setting of North America’s oldest city, St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. This heralded festival, and its accompanying academic symposium on the phenomenon of singing, bring together singers, conductors and scholars from countries and cultures worldwide. Here they participate in the very best of the world’s musical artistry and scholarship. Infused with a joyful spirit, this sharing of voices results in powerful and enriching experiences for all involved.
